Artist Bio
Receiving a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in Art Education from Virginia
Commonwealth University in 1986, Shawn McRaney's main focus was abstract
painting. Specifically, three dimensional constructionist paintings that focused
on colors, textures that fooled the eye as to materials used and variations
of grid patterns (see examples below). Rather than becoming an art teacher,
an opportunity to work for the Smithsonian Institution was pursued to provide
an ongoing education in the field of exhibitions, fabrication and art installation.
Working over an eleven year period, in the National Museum of African Art and later the Renwick Gallery of American Craft enhanced an awareness of art which is integrated in everyday life both spiritually and practically from diverse cultures. Ultimately, it was the combination of technical training, intimate exposure to these forms of art and a desire to explore new avenues of creativity that gave rise to an awareness of an art form which is long in tradition, murals. Decorative painting and murals fulfill three personal goals for Shawn McRaney. First, the opportunity to bring hand crafted beauty into personal surroundings similar to the intellectual traditions of the California Arts and Craft movement, Art Deco, Art Nouveau and even Greco-Roman murals. Second, the challenge and fulfillment of developing projects individually with clients. Third, to achieve the first two goals in a manner which is pleasant and affordable to everyone in order to expand the benefits of art beyond the gallery and museum experience. Originally from Falls Church, Virginia, Shawn McRaney has been residing
in Baltimore since 1991 and pursuing his current career since 1996. Recent Publications Featuring Shawn McRaneyAcrobat Reader Required
